How to migrate from P2P/P2V?

P2V/P2P Migration

What is P2P?

The full name of P2P is physical to physical. It is a method to migrate system from one physical computer to another same physical computer or even to a different physical computer. To restore system to a dissimilar hardware configure or a bare machine will be an easy task. P2P will help you in following:

  • Migrate to different hardware with minimal effort
  • Upgrade hardware while keeping all programs and settings intact
  • Replace failed hardware and cannot find an exact match for original system specification

Why to use P2P

As we know, Windows operating system family are always sensitive to different hardware, especially when it turns to replacement of such a crucial device as processor, HDD controller or motherboard - Windows will most likely fail to boot as a result of this operation.

And also, out of many different reasons, you may have to restore a system state backup that is installed on one computer to the same physical computer or to a different physical computer. Recovery from the following events may require a restore operation:

  • hardware failure
  • software failure
  • natural disaster
  • user error

"I want to upgrade my computer, but my new computer has different hardware from the old one. I have a vague idea of what will happen, like copying the /etc/*.conf files, /home directory, etc. but this seems very tedious, and the likelihood of me forgetting or overlooking something is 100%, and copying over entire disks or partitions wholesale is not necessary. Is there a utility for this?"

We can migrate our system state to another computer manually, but it will be a hard work and even may cause more potential issue in the future. P2P will help you to restore a system state from a physical computer to another, even with different hardware easily.

Migrate system from physical to physical

EaseUS Todo Backup solves the above issue with Recover to dissimilar hardware (P2P), restoring the system to a computer with a dissimilar processor, different motherboard or a different mass storage device from the system you originally backed up, providing highly flexible disaster restore and system migration.

What is P2V?

Physical to Virtual (P2V) refers to the migration or conversion of a physical machine's operating system, and its applications, or data from a physical computer to a virtual machine.

Pre and Post P2V Preparations

When performing a physical to virtual machine conversion, there are some preparations that should be taken into account before starting the conversion.

Pre P2V Preparations

Create a local user account on the physical computer with administrator privileges, or make sure you know, (and have tested), a local administrative account username and the password.

Post P2V Considerations

  • Before you power on the Virtual Machine, ensure that the vNIC is disconnected and set to not connect on start-up.
  • Check through the hardware listed for the VM and uninstall unapplicable virtual hardware devices, such as serial ports.
  • Install memory and vCPU's for the VM. For example, consider the number of vCPUs. If 4 vCPUs are allocated, try reducing to 2. If required, install the hypervisors agents\tools into the VM where applicable.
  • In a Windows VM, remove non present hardware devices and uninstall non-required services/daemons/ software.
  • Configure IP information such as IP address, Netmask, Gateway and DNS entries if required.
  • Configure networking to connect at power on, restart the VM, and check the logs for errors.
  • Test all application services to ensure they are working well.

Tips: EaseUS Todo Backup can help you convert/migrate disk and partition to vitual machine by converting image to virtual disk format. The virtual machine may not boot if you convert the disk image containing operating system.
