How to backup Windows Server 2008 data using differential backup?

Differential backup is based on the latest previous full backup. It only backs up the changed data since that full backup. By contrast, incremental backup is based on the most recent previous backup of any type. It backs up the changed data since last backup.

To restore a differential backup requires a specific differential backup and the latest full backup before it. The amount of changed data since last full backup decides the size of differential backup. If you create a series of differential backup then the size of backup will increase gradually. We recommend you have a new full backup at intervals, then the size of differential backup can reduce much. And it will take much less time for you to restore the differential backup.

This article is about the issue of differential backup on Windows Server 2008.

Windows Server Backup for Windows Server 2008

The previous version Windows Server 2003 uses Windows Backup (Ntbackup.exe) feature to differential backup Server data. Windows Server 2008 introduces new technology - the Windows Server Backup feature which provides a backup and recovery solution for Server 2008 users.

Note: You must be a member of the Administrators group or Backup Operators group to use Windows Server Backup. If you are a current user of the previous backup feature (Ntbackup.exe), and plan to switch to the new Windows Server Backup, you might meet following problems.

  • You need to reconfigure backup settings because it won't upgrade when you upgrade to Windows Server 2008.
  • You need a separate, dedicated disk to run scheduled backups.
  • You can only backup NTFS-formatted volumes on a locally attached disk.
  • You can no longer back up to tape.
  • You cannot recover backups that you created with Ntbackup.exe.

To access backup and recovery tools for Windows Server 2008, you must install the Windows Server Backup, Command-line Tools, and Windows PowerShell items first.
