Backup Windows Server 2003 with its built-in free backup program

The Windows Server 2003 built-in backup utility enables users to backup and restore files, system state, hard disk partition and setting for your Server. To backup Windows Server 2003, please access it at Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup, or you can type ntbackup command by cmd.exe to open Backup or Restore Wizard program. If you are running the utility for the first time, it presents you Backup and Restore Wizard as the following picture.

Click Advanced Mode to switch to advanced mode of Backup or Restore Wizard.

Click Backup Wizard (Advanced), you will get the backup wizard window.

Backup the computer with Windows Backup built-in Windows Server 2003

1. Tick the "Back up everything on this computer" option.

2. Select the backup type: File or LTO Ultrium, choose the destination to store the backup and type a name for the backup. If you select LTO Ultrium as backup type, the storage destination is tape device.

3. Click on Advanced button in Completing the Backup Wizard window.

4. Select the backup type: normal backup, copy backup, incremental backup, differential backup or daily backup.

• Normal backup - Backup selected files and mark each file as backed up.
• Copy backup - Backup selected files, but don't mark any as backed up.
• Incremental backup - Backup selected files only if they were created or modified since the previous backup.
• Differential backup - Backup selected files only if they were created or modified since the previous backup, but don't mark them as backed up.
• Daily backup - Backup only files that were created or modified today.

5. Set verification, compression, etc..

6. Append or replace the existing backups.

7. Backup now or later.

8. Select Later, type the job name and set schedule backup daily, weekly, monthly, etc.

9. Set account information, click OK and then click Next to complete the backup.

Backup selected files, drives or network data with Windows Backup built-in Windows Server 2003

1. On the What to Back Up window, tick the "Back up selected files, drives or network data" option.

2. Select the items you want to backup: files, drives or network shared files.

3. Follow the wizard to complete the backup settings.

Backup the system state with Windows Backup built-in Windows Server 2003

1. On the What to Back Up window, tick the "Only back up the System State data" option, it will backup system state of Windows Server 2003.

2. Select the backup type: File or LTO Ultrium, choose the destination to store the backup and type a name for the backup. If you select LTO Ultrium as backup type, the storage destination is tape device.

4. Follow the wizard to complete the backup settings.

Scheduling backup job with Windows Backup built-in Windows Server 2003

NTBackup offers the ability to schedule backup jobs. Use NTBackup and take the "Schedule" option to run the backup job daily, weekly, monthly, once, at system startup, at logon, when idle.

You can adjust the schedule manually once you have initially created it, from the control panel. Just click: Start -> Control Panel -> Scheduled Tasks. Double click on the job and then adjust the settings.

Tips: Windows Server 2008 has replaced NTBackup with Windows Server Backup.
