HomeFrequent backup protects Server data from accidental loss, such as Server's hardware or storage media failure. Backup your Windows Server 2003 so that you can easily restore the data when your hard disk has been erased or overwritten, or become inaccessible for a hard disk malfunction.
This article will explain how to protect your Server 2003 from losing data using differential backup. The Server differential backup software the document recommends also applies to Windows Server 2000, 2008.
There are three backup methods to backup your Server, each of them has advantages and drawbacks. Differential backup is a moderate method among these three.
Backup all data you select. It has an independent recovery. Its backup and recovery process takes longer than incremental backup and differential backup, but it's the safest backup and recovery method.
An incremental backup refers to a backup that includes just the changes made since the most recent backup of any type. It eliminates the need to store duplicate copies of unchanged data. An incremental backup links with the last backup before it. To restore an incremental backup requires retrieving the volumes of all backup sessions made before it, up to and including the full backup that started the chain. The longer the backup chain, the more time it will take to restore. But incremental backup has the fastest backup process.
A differential backup copies files that have been created or changed since the last full backup. Its recovery process requires only the latest full backup and the differential backup of one specific time point you want to restore. Its backup process is faster than full backup, and recovery process is faster than incremental backup.
