I have a pretty old computer running Windows Server 2003 and I was wondering would I be better off buying a new computer? But the problem of system installation lets me hesitate. I need to move everything from my old machine to that brand new computer. The reinstallation of system and applications is too much trouble for me. An easier solution I recently found is to restore my Windows Server 2003 image on my new server in just several simple clicks, and I want to share my experience here because I think this could be very useful to many of you.
Because the old machine has all the domain/active directory information of my Server 2003 and two servers can't co-exist in the same domain, so the migration of this type of installation is the only problem. Ways to deal with it:
Microsoft's method: to install a second server, then migrate manually. It's limited to 7 days. It will keep working unless the new server is promoted and the old one demoted.
Imaging software: to image the old server to an image file and restore the image to any different hardware with everything is maintained as it was: same machine ID, same domain name, same configuration, etc.
In my case, I choose to use imaging software because of time restrictions. I use EaseUS Todo Backup Server with Recover to dissimilar hardware to restore my server, the process is quite smooth and just the same as usual backup and recovery process. As far as I know, the general system migration to different hardware with different CPU, different brand motherboards, chipsets, video cards, Raid controllers, etc. needs to reinstall related drivers. When comes time to restore to different hardware, you will be asked for the path to install the necessary drivers. While, the Recover to dissimilar hardware function of EaseUS Todo Backup will perform perfectly automatically.
The most important factor promoting me to use this imaging software. Not like other backup & recovery software which are always beyond my budget. This utility works well and its charges are quite reasonable.
