How to image backup Windows Server 2008 with solid server backup software?

What is Windows Server Backup?

The Windows Server Backup feature in Windows Server 2008 consists of a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in and command-line tools that provide a complete solution for your day-to-day backup and recovery needs. You can use four wizards to guide you through running backups and recoveries. You can use Windows Server Backup to back up a full server (all volumes), selected volumes, or the system state. You can recover volumes, folders, files, certain applications, and the system state. And, in case of disasters like hard disk failures, you can perform a system recovery, which will restore your complete system to the new hard disk, by using a full server backup and the Windows Recovery Environment.

You can use Windows Server Backup to create and manage backups for the local computer or a remote computer. You can also schedule backups to run automatically and you can perform one-time backups to augment the scheduled backups.

Even though servers are designed to include redundancy for server and data protection, no organization could operate without a disaster recovery strategy that includes both a strong and regular backup strategy and a sound recovery system. This edition of Windows Backup is much more complete than previous editions, with the addition of both the Volume Shadow Copy service and the full systems recovery option. The first lets the system take a snapshot of all data before taking the backup, resolving many issues with the backup of open files. The second lets you rebuild a server without having to reinstall its software.

Limitations of Windows Server Backup

As with most things that come built-into the operating system, there are limitations in what's built into Windows. Most notably, the monitoring and reporting side is extremely weak, and there are also several gaping holes in terms of hardware support.

Monitoring and reporting

  • No concept of media rotation strategies
  • The wizards do not show
  • No such thing as emailing the backup status report
  • No way to automatically see what versions of backups are available on the backup device
  • The drive letter is removed from backup devices
  • No centralized monitoring ability for monitoring large numbers of servers

Hardware support

  • Cannot set up automated backups to RDX and REV drives using the Microsoft wizards
  • Cannot set up automated backups to NAS using the Microsoft wizards

Selection of items to backup

  • Can only select entire volumes to backup, not individual files and folders
  • Can only select local volumes to backup, not network shares
