Backup Exchange Server 2003/2007 with Windows Server backup software

Overview of Exchange Server Backup Methods

Online Backups

Online backups enable you backup Exchange in use. You don't need to stop any Exchange services when you do backup. You can do online backup by installing Exchange administrator or Exchange System Manager on a Server. (You can also use third party backup software, but you have to install the Exchange Agent or Exchange-aware backup software for they can extend the functionality of third-party backup software.)

NOTE: online backup without stopping Exchange services means files and folders in use are skipped.

Three backup types available:

• Normal (or Full): To backup all the directory or Exchange, including the log files. To restore from a normal backup, only one normal backup is needed. It is accomplished by backing up the whole database and all the log files, and then purging the log files.
• Incremental backup: only to backup the changed components since the last normal or incremental backup.
• Differential backup: only to backup changes occurred since the last normal backup.

Offline Backups

Offline backups refer to backups of Exchange Server when Exchange is in use. Planned offline backups will produce consistent database files. Unplanned offline backups are backups that are taken when the server fails. If Exchange Server fails before the backup, databases may need to repair after the restore procedure.

Windows Server backup software to backup Exchange
