Backup Exchange 2003 with NTBACKUP, Volume Shadows Copy service or EaseUS Todo Backup

A practical backup solution for Exchange 2003 is meaningful to Server users. This article is talking about the backup and disaster recovery solution provided by both Windows Server 2003 itself and third party Exchange backup software. To find backup method suitable to your own needs.

Generally, you can backup Exchange 2003 in 2 ways: Online backup and Offline backup.

Online backup - An online backup is performed while the Information Store is still mounted and the Exchange Server is operational. The Exchange is Online and available for transactions, therefore it still allows users to work without interruption.

Offline backup - Offline backup is performed by shutting down the Exchange Information Store service and performing COPY procedures on the Exchange databases (Public Folder or Mailbox stores). Using an Offline Backup provides a method to restore the Exchange system to its last known state or specific "point in time", and is usually considered to be less attractive than the Online backup.

Before you determine an Exchange backup solution for your Exchange Server 2003, you should consider the following:

• The stability of backup and recovery process. It's also a standard inspection of the backup software.
• For data security, whether this backup software can encrypt backups or not. Exchange Server data can have significant relationship with business secrets. To encrypt backup image is a good way to avoid disclosure of information.
• Backup schedule can ensure automatic protection for Exchange Server data, and save much efforts of users.
• You can have professional technical support after you installed the program.

Backup Exchange Server 2003 with NTBACKUP

Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2003 already have the built-in free backup program - NTBACKUP software installed by default. However, installing Exchange Server 2003 on these machines will upgrade NTBACKUP and allow it to be used to backup the Exchange databases.

To perform an online backup of Exchange Server 2003 follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Run, type NTBACKUP and press Enter.

2. If the Backup or Restore Wizard appears, on the Welcome to the Backup or Restore Wizard window, click Advanced Mode.

3. Click on the Backup tab.

4. Expand Microsoft Exchange Server on the Backup tab, expand servername, expand Microsoft Information Store, select the correct storage group's check-box or the entire information store check-box.

Tips: It can only backup an entire storage group rather than individual stores.

5. Follow the wizard to complete the other settings.

Backup Exchange 2003 with Volume Shadow Copy service

MS Windows Server 2003 provides the Volume Shadow Copy service feature to create applications which can backup Exchange 2003. You can create and manage shadow copies through third party storage management programs in collaboration with an infrastructure provided by this feature. Then related shadow copies or mirrored copies can be used to backup and restore Exchange Server 2003 database.

If you want to use this method to backup Exchange Server 2003, you must ensure that the backup program should include an Exchange Server 2003 aware Volume Shadow Copy service requestor. Because the backup program that is bundled with Windows Server has no such requestor, organizations must use third-party backup applications.

Three requirements to keep for the integrity and recoverability of Exchange databases:

• Exchange database, transaction log and checkpoint files must be backed up exclusively through the Exchange Writer.
• The backup application must validate the integrity of the shadow copy backup set.
• Restores to original location** must be done exclusively with the Exchange Writer.
